Dekhna na bhoolein aj raat aath, nau, dus baje ;)

Bigg Boss 7 is going to hit our television screens soon. No, I am not excited in the least to see the bare-all Khan murmuring and whispering something as he swings from one side to the other, cracking jokes that are lame and celebrities going bonkers at the sight of the short heighted muscle man. Albeit, Mr Khan does have a great screen presence but watching quarrelsome strangers abusing, brawling, playing games, talking to the cameras with weird expressions and eccentric opinions is too much to take for a common mortal.

Arnab Goswami’s fiery debates and the news channels provide no respite either. With not many television sets in the Iyer household, the junior most dweller (i.e me) is forced to watch the Ichhas, the Tapasyas, the Banis, the Meghas and their marriages followed by divorces followed by remarriages followed by heart/liver transplants and road accidents, not to forget the manipulative mother-in-laws, the scheming brother-in-laws and the make up which is always in place, no matter what the hour of the day.

Television is a very powerful medium to entertain and create value. Unfortunately, the devious serials and reality shows are cashing on the contriving aspect of human interactions. One school of thought suggests that television programming is ultimately going to be a reflection of the societal values. I believe that most of us uphold good values and have a sound conscience. Then, why can’t the entertainment shows mirror this goodness ?

Well, as of now, the junior most lodger in the Iyer household (i.e me) has decided to go for a run every evening. This is a noble endeavour to unload the flab from both body and mind !

Note – The above determination shall last until a new television set graces my room with the remote control solely in my hands.

  1. I completely agree with you! In fact you have expressed what I always thought, how can so much negativity be a reflection of all society. The sad part is even youth channels like MTV seem to show youngsters at each others throat and validate such behaviour! I wonder why we can't have some positive programming. I wonder if the powers that be at TV believe that among a billion population the only way to get attention is to be negative and to be loud.

    1. I understand what you are saying and I am nodding my head in approval :) Goodness comes naturally to most of us but may be, it is considered blah and boring.. So, creative energies are directed towards making plots that show people scheming, fighting and killing each other.. Haha.. so long as we dont get inspired by such ideas.. But, I feel that is also difficult.. Because if you see crap day in and day out, without you realizing, it will have an impact.. Thanks for reading my blog.. Have a great day :)

    2. I'm laughing as I'm typing. This is so hilarious and everyone can relate to it. Just wanted to ratify the earlier implied thought that there is inherent goodness in people. However, we can't see them in that light a lot of times and see glimpses of irritability, bickering and eccentricities. Its very easy to make a funny show about celebrities fighting over overtly silly grievances with each other, although I still can't figure out what's so funny about that but people seem to be blowing up the show's TRP out of the roof.I guess its sort of a guilty pleasure to engage in a gossip with the neighbourhood over the nauseating verbal diarrhoea that us mere mortals have to endure. Unfortunately most of the creative geniuses have taken the easy way out. "Itni mehnat kaun kare bhai"

It takes genuine creativity to make audiences laugh, cry, inspire, perspire :D etc with something positive. One example that comes to mind was Aamir Khan's 'Satyamev Jayete'. With only 14 episodes it leaves a much more profound indelible mark than the negativity being inculcated into the society while engaging in such guilty pleasures.

Ms. Neeta Iyer has a gift to put a positive spin on everything happening in her life and reading her blogs have an uplifting effect. Highly recommended that you keep writing and hope that the determination to be healthy stays past the arrival of the New TV. Even if it doesn't, happiness is the best exercise. Happy Blogging :)
